FULL ITINERARY

Timing: 08h00 – 17h00
We meet at On Any Day Adventures home in Pretoria for a fresh brew of coffee and a brief of what to expect on the cultural journey that awaits. On our bikes, we are on the tarred road that leads to Newtown precinct located in downtown Johannesburg.

The tour is aimed at bringing people into the city to see, touch and feel as well as interact with people on the streets and feel the pulse of the city.
Newtown is a precinct of Johannesburg and situated downtown. We aim to explore the artistic expression still prevalent today whilst remembering the political and cultural legends that have enriched the history of the city of gold.

About Newtown
Formerly a multi-cultural place that was deliberately burnt down in 1904 due a “plague” (1600 shacks and shops set alight) which saw residence moved to Kliptown. It was thereafter redeveloped and repositioned as an economic hub with mining houses, the JSE, financial institutions making it home. It has seen many deaths over the years; is on its revival journey – yet again.

We ride and walk the artsy streets characterized by iconic expressions in the form of design, architecture, art, fashion, live performances, historic jazz joints. We will get to breath in the pulse of the city through interactions with people as we explore.

Next up, we take a close look at The Kippie Moeketsi statue and learn more about the famous saxophonist as the “Father of South African Jazz” who made an international name for himself – yet died a pauper in 1983.

We do an elaborate Graffiti ride-walk along the Newtown freeway overpass where our guide will explain the different types of artwork. He will break down the pieces and explain the themes and styles. As a treat we will have a live demonstration of a graffiti artists at work.

We spot a little “Bokaap” nook in Newtown with beautifully painted buildings in bright colours and different graffiti designs to set each business apart based on their USP! Some of these buildings date back to 1913, tastefully preserved and maintained.
The iconic tour ends at Chancellor House – the very building that housed the law firm of Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. The conversation here will not only include these two icons but will also include a discussion on the famous musicians like Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela. A talented songstress will give us a beautiful rendition of a renowned Miriam Makeba song before we end of this amazing discovery of cultural heritage.

Venturing out into the countryside, your basket of adventure keeps getting fuller! Take a leisurely ride into Hennops Valley Magaliesberg, where some of the most unspoiled nature trails, soft game, plateaus, craft coffee, gin, beer tasting await. We head for the hills and take a cable car ride up to the top of the Magaliesburg to enjoy spectacular views of Gauteng and North West provinces. There is also the unique opportunity to view Ural Russian motorcycles in the area – a treasure trove.

Fact – JOBURG is still very young at just over 134 years old, has mined over 200 million years old gold and is super successful and progressive at it!
Fact – Around the corner from Newtown Junction lies the original gates of Chinatown in.
